The Partition of Ireland The Anglo-Irish Treaty From the 11th of July negotiations began to take place between the Sinn Fein (led by Arthur Griffith and Michael Collins) and the British government (led by Llyod George). Of course the aim of these talks for Sinn Fein was to gain a united Ireland, however, a united Ireland would be unlikely. Finally on the 6th December 1921 the Anglo-Irish Treaty was signed. The southern end of Ireland would be a free state and the North would have its borders redrawn and would remain part of Britain. The Treaty caused massive rifts within the Nationalists.
